What Your Mum REALLY Wants For Mother’s Day (Hint: It’s Not Another Mug!)

Every year, Mother’s Day gives us the perfect opportunity to show just how much we appreciate the women who do so much for us. The trouble is, it isn’t an easy task finding something so special year after year and we often find ourselves completely stumped. This just has us heading straight for the classic and, let’s face it, unoriginal chocolate and flower aisle in the nearest supermarket, usually last minute, where the choices are limited and the prices over-inflated!

When I was a little girl, my dad would take me and my two siblings to our local flower shop every Saturday before Mother’s Day. We would each choose a miniature bunch of not quite freshly cut flowers, pre-packed in a cellophane bag that I can picture perfectly even today. The following morning we would excitedly rush into our parent’s bedroom and present our mum with these three, almost identical, sets of flowers. She never once showed anything but delight, and I am more than sure she truly was delighted, but more at our excited little faces than the actual, already wilting, flowers. Whilst it’s a memory I hold dear to me today, I know that my mum most definitely deserved better! Dad... I blame you ;)

But what is it that mums really, really want for Mother’s Day? Here’s a little secret: most mums don’t really want ‘stuff’, they want moments, experiences to cherish and maybe just a little time for themselves.

So, before you rush to grab that last minute supermarket bouquet, here are some ideas that your mum probably really wishes for Mother’s Day this year.

1. A Lie-In (Without Any Interruptions!)

Mums are the absolute queens of early mornings (and late nights, and middle of the night frequent wake ups!) Whether it’s getting the children ready for school, making everyone their breakfast or dealing with an early riser, they rarely get a proper lie-in.

This Mother’s Day, why not give her the gift of uninterrupted sleep? No alarms, no noisy children, no “Mum, where’s my…?” Let her wake up when she is ready to wake up, not when the world demands her to.

For bonus points, bring her a scrumptious breakfast in bed when she does wake up. Steaming coffee, warm croissants fresh from the oven and maybe a sweet handwritten note on the side. I know that would be heaven for me!

2. A Day Without Cooking (Or Cleaning!)

If you're a mum yourself, you'll most likely be spending far too much time planning the week’s meals, shopping for all the food and doing most, if not all, of the cooking - I can certainly think of many other things I would rather be doing with my time so I'm sure your mum must too! For just one day, why not take this off your mum’s plate (quite literally!).

Treating her to lunch out at her favourite restaurant, cooking her a delicious dinner or simply telling her to put her feet up whilst you wash up - she’ll appreciate these so much more than you will know.

3. Some Genuine, Uninterrupted ‘Me-Time”

Fun fact: Mums never stop. Even when they do sit down - to drink that lukewarm cup of tea they made an hour ago but never got to drink - their minds are still running through the to-do list that’s longer than the weekly supermarket receipt (and we all know how long that is!).

This Mother’s Day, give her the gift of guilt-free relaxation. It could look something like this:

  • A long bath all to herself, no one interrupting her. To make it more special, you could create the feel of an at-home spa by lighting some candles and adding some bath salts to her bath.
  • An hour or two with her book or a magazine, snuggled on the sofa with a hot cup of tea - lovingly made by you.
  • A quiet walk, or a spa visit - just some peaceful time to herself to relax and recharge, something she rarely gets.

A small amount of me-time goes a long way and she will be so thankful for that time to pause without feeling like she has to be onto the next task.

4. A Thoughtful Gesture That Shows You Really Know Her

The most memorable Mother’s Day presents aren’t about the price tags - they’re all about the thought behind them. A simple, heartfelt gesture can mean so much more than any expensive present. Think about what your mum loves, where she likes to be, who she has lots of fun and laughter with and where she is the happiest.

Some ideas are:

  • A framed photo of a special time together, or all of the family, together.
  • A playlist of all of her most favourite songs, so she can have all the memories that each song brings and she can sing along to her heart’s content.
  • A handwritten letter, telling her why she means so much to you.
  • A freshly baked cake or her favourite treat, that you can all enjoy together as a family, sitting, chatting and reminiscing.

It doesn’t have to be about spending money, all she really wants is to feel appreciated and loved, especially on that one day. That’s what Mother’s Day is all about.

5. A Thoughtful Box Of Gifts (Because She Deserves A Treat)

Ok, so we’ve covered the free (and priceless) presents but if you really do want to give her something special that she can unwrap and enjoy, how about a beautifully curated gift box to really spoil her? Carefully packed in a luxury gift box, she’ll uncover a variety of treats that she can enjoy for days to come.

  • They’re thoughtful - each item is handpicked with care, from small businesses here in the UK.
  • They’re indulgent - every gift box is filled with treats she wouldn’t usually buy for herself and she’ll discover lots of amazing new brands.
  • They’re personal - inside the box will be a handwritten notecard, with your personal message, so she will know it was chosen just for her, making it even more special.
