How to Send a Personalised Gift to Someone in the UK When You Live Abroad

Living abroad doesn't stop you wanting to celebrate birthdays, say thank you or simply let someone know you're thinking of them. The difficult part is working out how to send a gift that still feels personal when you're hundreds or even thousands of miles away. The good news is that you don't need to buy gifts where you live, wrap them yourself or organise international postage. Simply choose your gift online and we'll prepare it here in the UK before sending it directly to your recipient.

At Woodbury Blue, we've helped customers in the USA, the Netherlands and many other countries send thoughtful gifts to friends and family across the UK. Some choose one of our ready-made gift boxes because everything has already been carefully put together, while others prefer to build their own gift box to create something more personal. Either way, every gift is beautifully presented, includes a genuine handwritten notecard, contains no prices or invoices, and arrives ready for the recipient to open and enjoy.

Can I Order a Gift for Someone in the UK from Abroad?

Yes. Whether you live in Australia, the USA, Canada, Europe or elsewhere, you can order a gift online and have it delivered directly to a UK address. We’ll prepare everything here in the UK, handwrite your personal message, beautifully package your gift and send it straight to the recipient, so there is no need to buy gifts locally, wrap them yourself or organise international postage.

For many people living abroad, this removes one more thing to organise. You can still choose the gift yourself without asking a family member or friend in the UK to shop, wrap and post it on your behalf, which means you remain involved in what is being sent while Woodbury Blue takes care of everything else.

Why ordering from a UK gift business is easier

Posting a gift internationally can quickly become more complicated than expected. You may need to find suitable products locally, package everything securely, calculate international postage and allow additional time for the parcel to travel, while customs forms and restrictions can make certain products difficult to send.

When you order from Woodbury Blue, the gift begins its journey here in the UK. You choose what the recipient receives and write your message, then we take care of the presentation, handwritten notecard and delivery to their UK address.

Customers ordering from abroad could easily choose something from a large online retailer, but many are looking for a gift that feels more personal. When you are hundreds or thousands of miles away, details such as beautiful presentation and a genuine handwritten message help the gift feel as though you have put real care into choosing it, even though you cannot hand it over yourself.

How to send a gift directly to someone in the UK

The process is straightforward.

1. Choose the type of gift

You can select one of our curated gift boxes, create your own combination of products through Build Your Own, or choose an individual or letterbox-friendly gift when something smaller feels more appropriate.

2. Add your personal message

During the order process, write the message you would like included with the gift. We will handwrite it onto a notecard, so the recipient receives your own words rather than a generic printed slip.

3. Enter the recipient’s UK address

Use the recipient’s address as the delivery address and enter your own details where the checkout asks for billing information. Check the postcode carefully and remember to include any flat number, building name or company name that forms part of the address.

4. Leave the rest to Woodbury Blue

Your gift will be prepared here in the UK, with no prices or invoices included inside the parcel, and sent directly to the recipient. You do not need to receive it first, repackage it or arrange another delivery yourself.

Should you choose a curated or Build Your Own gift box?

The best option depends on how much you know about the recipient and how involved you would like to be in choosing the contents.

Choose a curated gift box when you want something easy

A curated gift box is ideal when you want everything selected and coordinated for you. The products have already been chosen to work well together, so you can find a box that suits the occasion, add your message and place the order without having to compare every individual item.

This can be particularly helpful when you need to send a birthday, thank-you or self-care gift and want something ready to send without spending a long time deciding what to include.

Build your own when you want something more personal

A Build Your Own gift box gives you more control over what is included, which can be especially valuable when you live abroad and want the gift to reflect the person rather than simply the occasion.

You can choose products around their tastes, personality and current circumstances, whether that means a few pampering treats, something comforting, their favourite type of chocolate or a mixture of smaller gifts they will genuinely use. The finished box can feel as though you selected everything in person, while Woodbury Blue takes care of putting it all together.

You can start creating your own gift through our Build Your Own Gift Box service.

How to make an overseas gift feel personal

Living in another country doesn't mean the gift needs to feel distant or generic. Start by thinking about the person rather than relying entirely on the occasion.

A birthday may be the reason you are sending something, but the contents can reflect how they spend their evenings, the treats they enjoy or what is happening in their life. Someone who has recently moved house might appreciate a candle, room fragrance and chocolate, while a friend going through a demanding period may value products chosen around comfort and rest. An expectant mother might appreciate a gift focused on her rather than another present centred entirely on the baby.

Your notecard is just as important as the products. A few personal lines, an affectionate reference or a private joke can make the finished gift feel unmistakably yours.

One thing we have noticed after helping customers send gifts from abroad is that many worry their gift will not feel personal enough because they cannot hand it over themselves. In reality, it is often the thought behind the chosen products and the handwritten message that make the strongest impression.

A real example of an order placed from the Netherlands

One recent customer living in the Netherlands first discovered Woodbury Blue through an individual satin sleep mask, but rather than ordering the product on its own, they went on to create a complete Build Your Own pamper box for someone in the UK who was expecting a baby.

They selected a collection of comforting products for the recipient and also included something intended for her partner. The message was warm, personal and lightly humorous, so the finished box felt connected to the people receiving it rather than like a standard pregnancy hamper.

The customer chose everything online and we handled the box, presentation, handwritten message and UK delivery. They did not need to purchase the products in the Netherlands, post them internationally or ask someone in the UK to help.

This is one of the reasons we value the Build Your Own service so much. It allows someone living hundreds or thousands of miles away to create a gift that still feels highly personal and specific to the recipient.

Can one gift box include something for several people?

Yes. A gift box does not have to contain products for only one person.

You might be sending primarily to a new mother but still want to include a treat for her partner, or you may want to create a housewarming box with products chosen for both members of a couple. A family gift could also combine a few shared treats with individual items for different people.

Build Your Own works particularly well in these situations because you are not restricted to a fixed theme. You can create one joined-up gift while still acknowledging the partner, family member or carer who is part of the occasion.

When several people are celebrating completely separate occasions, individual boxes may make more sense, but for a couple, household or shared moment, including something for more than one person can make the gift feel even more personal.

What to check before placing your order

Before completing your order, check the recipient’s full name and UK delivery address carefully, including the postcode and any flat number, building name or workplace details.

It is also worth reading your notecard message through before submitting it, particularly names, spellings and personal references. We write the message as it is supplied, so check anything you would not want changed or copied incorrectly.

Allow enough time for the gift to be prepared and delivered, and review the current dispatch information before ordering, especially around Christmas, bank holidays and other busy periods.

Finally, make sure you have entered the recipient’s address for delivery rather than your own overseas address. Your billing and delivery addresses can be different, which allows you to pay from abroad while sending the parcel directly to someone in the UK.

Sending a personal gift from abroad can still be easy

Living abroad should not make sending a meaningful gift more difficult.

You can choose a ready-made box when you want everything selected for you, or build your own around the person, their circumstances and the products they are most likely to enjoy. You choose the gift and write your message, then Woodbury Blue takes care of the presentation, handwritten notecard and delivery to the recipient in the UK.

The result is a gift that feels as though you put it together yourself, without the international postage, packaging and practical work that would normally be involved.

Frequently asked questions

Will the recipient have to pay customs fees or import charges?

No. Although you are placing the order from abroad, your gift is prepared and dispatched by Woodbury Blue from within the UK to a UK address. It is not entering the country as an international parcel, so the recipient will not be asked to pay customs fees or import charges.

Can my billing country be different from the delivery country?

Yes. Enter your own overseas address as the billing address and the recipient’s UK address as the delivery address. Your billing details should match the details registered to your chosen payment method, while the delivery details should be those of the person receiving the gift.

How long will my gift take to arrive?

Orders are usually prepared and dispatched within 1 working day. Once dispatched, delivery through Royal Mail Tracked 48 usually takes 2-3 working days and Tracked 24 takes 1-2 working days.

You will receive a tracking link when the parcel is on its way. Please allow additional time around Christmas, UK bank holidays and other particularly busy periods.

What happens if the recipient is not at home?

Your gift will be sent using a Royal Mail Tracked service. If the recipient is not at home, Royal Mail may leave the parcel in their nominated Safeplace where this is available and considered suitable.

If the parcel cannot be left safely, Royal Mail will normally attempt delivery again on the next working day. The tracking information will show the latest update and any available delivery options.

Can I track the delivery from another country or timezone?

Yes. Once your gift has been dispatched, a Royal Mail tracking link will be sent to the email address used when placing the order. You can open the link from anywhere in the world to see the latest delivery updates and follow the parcel until it reaches the recipient.

Your location or timezone will not affect your ability to access the tracking information.

What if I need the gift to arrive by a particular date?

Please check the current preparation and delivery times before ordering and allow as much time as possible, particularly if the gift is for a birthday or another date-specific occasion.

Royal Mail Tracked provides delivery updates and an estimated timeframe, but delivery dates are not guaranteed unless a guaranteed service has specifically been selected. Ordering early is always the safest option when the gift needs to arrive for a particular day.
